In everything they do, Prayer Chaplains are trained to do four things:
- Hold sacred space
- Listen with the ears of their hearts
- Pray out loud
- Hold what has been said in confidence
At each Sunday and Wednesday service, as well as other special services throughout the year, Prayer Chaplains arrive early to the space, don their prayer stole, and immerse themselves in consciousness so they can hold the sacredness of the space. These individuals are available during this time for personal prayer. You are invited to approach a prayer chaplain before or after service and bring voice to your joy or concern. You, as well as the Prayer Chaplain, will be richly blessed by this experience.
Wellness Calling All members of Unity Christ Church are paired with a Prayer Chaplain. Prayer Chaplains call their membership list every month to offer prayer support. A short affirmation may be left if a voicemail is reached. A card may be sent if a member was missed, letting them know they were held in prayer.
How else may we pray with you? If you are in need of prayer support, or would like your Prayer Chaplain to know of some event in your life, you can also call the Prayer Chaplain voicemail and leave a confidential message. Messages are checked and responded to daily by a member of the Prayer Chaplain Team. Call anytime: 763-521-4793 ext 44.
Becoming a Prayer Chaplain
All members of Unity Christ Church are invited to become a Prayer Chaplain Candidate. Candidates enter a time of discernment and training to discover if they are called to become a Prayer Chaplain.
The training program runs from January to March each year and includes a workshop, both onsite and offsite training, discernment conversations with the trainers, as well as time for reflection, community and fun. No experience is necessary - you do not need to "know how to pray".
After the training, Prayer Chaplains commit to 12 months of service, from April to March. Each month Prayer Chaplains serve during 2 to 3 services, call their membership list to offer prayer support and attend a monthly ongoing training session (no training sessions in July and August).
If you have any questions about becoming a Prayer Chaplain, you are invited to contact Prayer Chaplain trainers Jean Brandes and Judie Schumacher (pictured at right).
The annual training is approximately $200. Partial scholarships may be requested.
